Having been a member of the Business and Trade Committee and previously the International Trade Select Committee, I have spent a great deal of time over the past few years examining evidence and questioning experts relating to trade.
From scrutinising the Australia and New Zealand trade deals to having the opportunity to stand up for victims of the Post Office scandal during an inquiry session, the role has been fascinating and extremely varied. International trade can benefit companies across South Devon, by opening up export opportunities and giving us the chance to export our world-class, high welfare standard produce to new markets.
Trade allows us to diversify our supply chains and create new global cooperation opportunities to tackle some of the most challenging issues, such as climate change.
I have been clear about the need for the UK Government to learn from its experience of signing its first new major trade deals, as well as to improve the scuritny process so that every Member of Parliament might have the opportunity to speak on the subject.
I hope to be able to continue to play a role in our trade agreements, for the benefit of residents across South Devon.
