The A379 Slapton Line has been a constant source of concern. With ever-increasing storms and adverse weather conditions, it is absolutely essential that we protect this road which is of great social, economic and historic importance.
I have therefore been working with key stakeholders over the past four years to shore up defences along the road and ensure that it stands against time and tide for at least the next two decades.
As Chair of the Slapton Line Partnership group, I have worked alongside South Hams District Council, Devon County Council, Parish Councils and other groups such as the Field Studies Council to ensure the local community's needs are at the forefront of our plans.
We have made real progress in reconstituting the Slapton Line Partnership, updating the strategy document and ensuring that new measures can be put in place to protect this vital road. However, the significant cost means that we must look to both Devon County Council and central Government for funding.
I have raised the subject in parliament on a number of occasions, including leading a parliamentary debate dedicated to highlighting the road's importance to Ministers and make the case for funding.
I hope to be able to continue working with the Partnership to ensure we follow through on the actions that have been agreed, to see real progress both on the Slapton Line itself and on the back routes.
